Why turn-based RPGs feel right on a phone

There's a reason turn-based combat keeps thriving on mobile while flashier genres struggle. You can pause between moves, put the phone down, come back, and nothing is lost. That fits how we actually play on the go.

Playing Ember & Oath got me thinking about this. I did most of its fights in short chunks — a battle on the tram here, a couple of dialogue choices over lunch there. A twitchy action game would have punished that. A turn-based one just waited patiently.

The trade-off is that turn-based games ask you to actually think, which not everyone wants on a small screen. But when the systems are good, that thinking is the whole point.

If you've bounced off mobile RPGs before, try one that leans into turns rather than reflexes. It might click in a way the others never did.
